Denison Library Friends to meet September 9

The Denison Library Friends will meet Monday, September 9, at 5:30 p.m. in the Carnegie Room at Norelius Community Library.  

The agenda includes the Titanic program on September 24, the Recycled Christmas Sale/Bake Sale/Book Sale in November and the library director’s report.  

The public is invited to attend the meeting. 

The following meeting will be Monday, November 11, at 5:30 p.m. at Norelius Community Library.

Boy Scout paper drive September 14

The Boy Scouts of Troop 55 in Denison will conduct their monthly paper drive on Saturday, September 14, at the Walmart parking lot. The Scouts will be there from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. to help unload tied, bundled or sacked newspapers. 

Acceptable papers can be brought in paper bags or cardboard boxes but not in plastic bags. People are asked to limit the amount of cardboard they bring.

VFW Auxiliary to meet September 9

Schleswig VFW Auxiliary #3930 will conduct its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, September 9 at the golf course.

Members are reminded to pay their dues.

Items at the meeting will be last minute details on the float, basket and Hoffman window.

Schleswig VFW Auxiliary to distribute poppies

The Schleswig VFW Auxiliary will distribute poppies during the Calf Show Days/Quasquicentennial celebration. Auxiliary members will be at the Chrome Spur and the community building on the evening of Wednesday, September 11; will distribute poppies before and after the parade on Saturday, September 14; and will distribute poppies at the Schleswig Community Building during the craft show and chicken dinner. 

Poppies may also be picked up at Bank Iowa, United Bank of Iowa, KCK’s, FAC and the golf course anytime before Calf Show Days.

Buddy Poppies are assembled by disabled and needy veterans in government hospitals and workshops supervised by the VFW. The poppies are never sold but given in exchange for a contribution. Contributions are used to benefit veterans.

The VFW Auxiliary members have decorated the window at The Hoffman Agency. This year’s theme is “VFW Auxiliary – Looking Back on 80 Years.”
