May 1, 8:20 p.m.: The Crawford County Sheriff’s Office investigated a one-vehicle accident. Jared Donald Ray Kudera, 44, of Sioux City, was driving a green 1997 Cadillac Deville east in the 2300 block of Highway 141, driving on a wet surface. As he was about to crest a hill, Kudera claimed the back end of his vehicle came out, causing him to lose control. The vehicle entered the north ditch where it hit an embankment with the left front. The vehicle then spun around and the right rear collided with the embankment. The vehicle spun out to the middle of the westbound lane of traffic. No one was reported injured. Kudera was charged with OWI 2nd offense, driving while license suspended and failure to maintain control. The vehicle received $8,000 damage and was towed.

May 14, 1:20 p.m.: The Denison Police Department investigated a two-vehicle accident that happened on Court Street. Ronald Herman Maack, 87, of Charter Oak, was backing a black 2012 GMC Acadia, from a parking spot on the west side of the Crawford County Courthouse and struck a white 2010 Ford Explorer XLT, which was on the west side of the parking lot. The Ford Explorer received a slight scrape on the push guard and Maack’s vehicle received $400 damage to the rear middle.

May 14, 6:18 p.m.: The Denison Police Department investigated a two-vehicle accident that happened in the east parking lot of Greater Iowa Credit Union. Sael Vitt Jr., 14, of Denison, was driving a silver 2011 Toyota Camry and was unable to make a right-hand turn into the alley between North 7th Street and 2nd Avenue North. John Kak Dojiok, 48, of Denison, was operating a gold 2012 Chevrolet Cruze LT. Dojiok entered the parking lot and parked in a parking space. Vitt began to back up and hit Dojiok’s vehicle. Vitt’s vehicle received $300 damage to the rear passenger side corner and Dojiok’s received $2,000 damage to the front driver side. No one was injured.

May 16, 2:29 p.m.: Mary Catherine Rasmussen, 77, of Manilla, was driving a blue 2004 Jeep Liberty Sport north on Donna Reed Road and stopped at the stop sign at Highway 30 and Donna Reed Road. Cindy Lou Klink, 64, of Denison, was driving a blue 2017 Ford Fusion east on Highway 30. Rasmussen failed to yield to oncoming traffic and pulled out in front of Klink’s vehicle. Klink’s vehicle struck Rasmussen’s vehicle. Both drivers had possible injuries (complaint of pain). Rasmussen’s vehicle received $4,000 damage and was disabled. Klink’s vehicle received $10,000 damage and was totaled.

May 16, 4:46 p.m.: Mary Frances Wollsey-Totten, 28, of Dow City, trespassed at Walmart by taking items from the store without paying. She was charged with theft in the 5th degree.

May 16, 9:12 p.m.: Isela Jasmin Mendoza, 23, of Denison, and Jose Enrique Vega Ramirez, 46, of Denison, were arrested for violating a no-contact order.

May 17, 11:51 a.m.: Rolando Lomes Godoy, 34, of Denison, was arrested for theft in the 5th degree for taking a $40 bottle of whiskey from Hy-Vee.

May 17, 12:29 p.m.: The Denison Police Department investigated a two-vehicle accident that happened on Highway 59/141 near Medical Parkway. Luis David Cruz Felipe, 18, of Schleswig, was driving a white 2012 Ford F150 Supercrew pickup east on Highway 59/141. Felipe was driving alongside a white 2015 Ford Transit T-250 van. Felipe began to merge into the left lane unaware that the van was there and sideswiped the van. No one was injured. Felipe’s vehicle received $4,000 damage to the rear driver side. Mattingly’s vehicle received $4,000 damage to the middle passenger side. Felipe was cited for not having a valid driver’s license.

May 20, 1:52 p.m.: The Denison Police Department investigated a two-vehicle accident that happened on Highway 30. Billie Jo Mead, 34, of Charter Oak, was driving a gray 2021 Chevrolet Traverse and was stopped in Dairy Queen’s driveway exit. Anahy Belen Martinez, 22, of Denison, was driving a white 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee and was traveling east in the southern-most lane of Highway 30. Mead had a dog loose in her vehicle. During the time of sitting in the exit lane and with the loose dog, Mead started entering Highway 30 from the south, striking Martinez’s vehicle in the right rear wheel area. No one was injured. Mead’s vehicle received $1,500 damage to the front passenger side corner. Martinez’s vehicle received $2,000 damage to the rear passenger side. Mead was cited for failing to yield to a passing vehicle.

May 21, 7:43 p.m.: The Denison Police Department investigated a three-vehicle accident that happened on North 10th Street. Kurtis William Buter, 34, of Denison, was driving a gray 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee and was exiting a parking area off the west side of North 10th Street and struck a gray 2005 Honda Accord in the driver’s side. The Accord, being driven by Atair Mayot Ajang, 23, of Denison, was sent into a slide and bounced off the curb on the east side of the road, and then back over to the west side where it struck the front of a gray 2012 Honda Accord.  Ajang’s vehicle came to a stop in the front yard of 523 North 10th Street. No injuries were reported. Buter’s vehicle received $3,500 damage to the front passenger side corner. Ajang’s vehicle received $2,000 damage to the middle driver side. The 2012 Honda Accord received $4,000 damage to the front middle. Buter was cited for failing to yield upon entering a through highway. Ajang was cited for driving while license denied, suspended cancelled or revoked. 

May 18, 9:01 p.m.: Joel Antonio Guzman, 21, of Denison, was charged with theft in the 4th degree for taking merchandise valued at $709 from Walmart.

May 19, 8 p.m.: Cherelle Anne Bissell, 35, of Okoboji, was charged with violation of a no-contact/protective order.

May 22, 10 a.m.: The Denison Police Department investigated a two-vehicle accident that happened on Highway 30. Angela Lee Lensch, 46, of Glidden, was driving a white 2019 Ford Fusion south on South 16th Street and failed to obey to a steady red light at the intersection of Highway 30 and South 16th Street while trying to make a left-hand turn. Robert Edward Muhlbauer, 55, of Vail, was driving a silver 2003 Pontiac Grand Am east on Highway 30 and hit Lensch’s vehicle broadside. Muhlbauer’s vehicle came to a stop in the middle of Highway 30 and South 16th Street and was completely disabled. Lensch’s vehicle skidded across South 16th Street and came to a stop on the right side of South 16th Street. Lensch’s vehicle received $5,000 damage to the middle passenger side. Muhlbauer’s vehicle received $7,000 damage to the front middle. Both vehicles were towed. No one was injured. Lensch was cited for failure to respond to a steady red light. 

May 22, 11:25 a.m.: The Denison Police Department investigated a two-vehicle accident that happened on Highway 30. Shishay Haile Abrehaley, 55, of Storm Lake, was driving a black 2009 Chevrolet Equinox west in the inside lane of Highway 30 near Ace Rent to Own when she changed lanes and collided with a silver 1998 Honda Civic LX being driven west in the curbside lane of Highway 30 by Miguel Alcaraz, 19, of Denison. Abrehaley’s vehicle received $500 damage to the rear passenger side corner. Alcaraz’s vehicle received $1,200 damage to the front middle. Alcaraz was cited for driving while revoked. No injuries were reported.

May 22, 11:53 a.m.: The Denison Police Department investigated a two-vehicle accident that happened on Highway 30. Sishay Haile Abrehaley, 55, of Storm Lake, was driving a black 2009 Chevrolet Equinox LS east in the inside lane of Highway 30 near Arnold Motor Supply. She made an unsafe lane change and collided with a black 2021 Chevrolet Traverse being driven east in the curbside lane by Beverly C. Weeks, 49, of Omaha, Nebraska. Abrehaley’s vehicle received $800 damage to the front passenger side. Weeks’s vehicle received $1,000 damage to the rear driver side. Abrehaley was cited for making an improper lane change. No one was reported injured.

May 23, 3:14 P.M.: The Denison Police Department investigated a two-vehicle accident that happened on South Main Street. Violet Grace Christensen, 17, of Denison, was driving a silver 2011 Subaru Outback east on Highway 30 when she made a left turn onto South Main Street, causing a collision with a blue 2013 Nissan Versa being driven west on Highway 30 by Hugo Lopez Ramos, 41, of Denison. Both drivers advised that a delivery truck was waiting to turn left in the inside lane, causing a blind spot for both drivers as they tried to cross the intersection on a yellow light. Christensen received a possible injury (complaint of pain) but was not transported. Isabel Jepsen, 17, of Charter Oak, a passenger in Christensen’s vehicle, was also listed as an injured person. Lopez Ramos’s vehicle received $8,000 damage to the front middle and was considered totaled. Christensen’s vehicle received $4,000 damage to the middle passenger side.

May 24, 10:47 p.m.: Darwin Santos Cardozo, 22, of Denison, was arrested for domestic abuse assault, injury or mental illness, 1st offense. The criminal complaint filed in district court said he caused injuries to the victim’s head, neck, wrists and knees.

May 26, 1:19 p.m.: The Denison Police Department investigated a hit-and-run accident that happened in the parking lot at Beer Thirty located along Highway 30. Tyler Lee Braasch told the investigating officer that he was inside Beer Thirty when another customer told him that someone had backed up and hit his green 2002 Chevrolet Silverado pickup and had driven off. Braasch said he ran outside trying to yell at the driver to stop but the vehicle fled the scene. The vehicle was later identified as a blue 2021 Hyundai Palisade SEL. The investigating officer got a cell phone picture of the vehicle from a witness. The witness said she was sitting in her vehicle when she heard and witnessed the vehicle back into the pickup and her first reaction was to take a photo of the other vehicle’s license plate before it fled the scene. At the time the police report was filed, the Hyundai had not been located. The pickup received $500 damage to the middle passenger side.

May 26, 6:18 p.m.: Jonathan Fabian Segura Avina, 25, of Denison, was arrested and charged with domestic abuse assault, injury or mental illness, 1st offense.

May 27, 12:30 a.m.: Mavrick Harris, 30, of Denison, was arrested on two warrants and charged with violating a no-contact order. According to documents filed in district court, Harris was charged with domestic abuse assault impeding flow of air/blood and child endangerment, both aggravated misdemeanors. A criminal complaint said that at about 12:15 p.m. on May 22, Harris knowingly impeded the normal breathing or circulation of blood by applying pressure to the throat/neck area of his victim, and that he abandoned his child with an unknown female after assaulting the mother of the child. The person with which the child was abandoned said she did not know Harris or the child, but that Harris handed the child to her while she was outside her residence smoking. A document filed in regard to violation of a no-contact order said that Harris spoke to the victim at 12:01 a.m. on May 27.

May 27, 12:30 a.m.: A resident of Denison reported the theft of a red Lululemon bag with women’s clothing valued at $100.

May 27, 5:33 p.m.: The Crawford County Sheriff’s Office investigated a vehicle vs. deer accident. Liliana Lissbeth Saravia Gomez, 24, of Denison, was driving a red 2024 Honda Pilot west on S Avenue when a deer ran onto the roadway. The vehicle struck the deer with its front driver’s side, resulting in $5,000 damage.

May 28, 12:57 p.m.: The Crawford County Sheriff’s Office investigated a two-vehicle accident that happened in Denison. Leonardo Dennis Nava, 23, of Audubon, was driving a blue 2021 Ford Explorer, owned by the City of Denison Police Department, north on 15th Street and was at the intersection with 4th Avenue North. Nava said he looked but didn’t see a red 2000 Pontiac Sunfire SE and proceeded from a yield sign at the intersection. His vehicle collided with the passenger side of the Pontiac, which was being driven east on 4th Avenue North by Jesus Segouiano-Trujillo, 69, of Denison. The police vehicle received $8,500 damage and Segouiano-Trujillo’s vehicle received $2,000 damage. No injuries were reported.
