May 18, 9:01 p.m.: Joel Antonio Guzman, 21, of Denison, was charged with theft in the 4th degree for taking merchandise valued at $709 from Walmart.

May 19, 8 p.m.: Cherelle Anne Bissell, 35, of Okoboji, was charged with violation of a no-contact/protective order.

May 22, 10 a.m.: The Denison Police Department investigated a two-vehicle accident that happened on Highway 30. Angela Lee Lensch, 46, of Glidden, was driving a white 2019 Ford Fusion south on South 16th Street and failed to obey to a steady red light at the intersection of Highway 30 and South 16th Street while trying to make a left-hand turn. Robert Edward Muhlbauer, 55, of Vail, was driving a silver 2003 Pontiac Grand Am east on Highway 30 and hit Lensch’s vehicle broadside. Muhlbauer’s vehicle came to a stop in the middle of Highway 30 and South 16th Street and was completely disabled. Lensch’s vehicle skidded across South 16th Street and came to a stop on the right side of South 16th Street. Lensch’s vehicle received $5,000 damage to the middle passenger side. Muhlbauer’s vehicle received $7,000 damage to the front middle. Both vehicles were towed. No one was injured. Lensch was cited for failure to respond to a steady red light. 

May 22, 11:25 a.m.: The Denison Police Department investigated a two-vehicle accident that happened on Highway 30. Shishay Haile Abrehaley, 55, of Storm Lake, was driving a black 2009 Chevrolet Equinox west in the inside lane of Highway 30 near Ace Rent to Own when she changed lanes and collided with a silver 1998 Honda Civic LX being driven west in the curbside lane of Highway 30 by Miguel Alcaraz, 19, of Denison. Abrehaley’s vehicle received $500 damage to the rear passenger side corner. Alcaraz’s vehicle received $1,200 damage to the front middle. Alcaraz was cited for driving while revoked. No injuries were reported.

May 22, 11:53 a.m.: The Denison Police Department investigated a two-vehicle accident that happened on Highway 30. Sishay Haile Abrehaley, 55, of Storm Lake, was driving a black 2009 Chevrolet Equinox LS east in the inside lane of Highway 30 near Arnold Motor Supply. She made an unsafe lane change and collided with a black 2021 Chevrolet Traverse being driven east in the curbside lane by Beverly C. Weeks, 49, of Omaha, Nebraska. Abrehaley’s vehicle received $800 damage to the front passenger side. Weeks’s vehicle received $1,000 damage to the rear driver side. Abrehaley was cited for making an improper lane change. No one was reported injured.

May 23, 3:14 P.M.: The Denison Police Department investigated a two-vehicle accident that happened on South Main Street. Violet Grace Christensen, 17, of Denison, was driving a silver 2011 Subaru Outback east on Highway 30 when she made a left turn onto South Main Street, causing a collision with a blue 2013 Nissan Versa being driven west on Highway 30 by Hugo Lopez Ramos, 41, of Denison. Both drivers advised that a delivery truck was waiting to turn left in the inside lane, causing a blind spot for both drivers as they tried to cross the intersection on a yellow light. Christensen received a possible injury (complaint of pain) but was not transported. Isabel Jepsen, 17, of Charter Oak, a passenger in Christensen’s vehicle, was also listed as an injured person. Lopez Ramos’s vehicle received $8,000 damage to the front middle and was considered totaled. Christensen’s vehicle received $4,000 damage to the middle passenger side.

May 24, 10:47 p.m.: Darwin Santos Cardozo, 22, of Denison, was arrested for domestic abuse assault, injury or mental illness, 1st offense. The criminal complaint filed in district court said he caused injuries to the victim’s head, neck, wrists and knees.

May 26, 1:19 p.m.: The Denison Police Department investigated a hit-and-run accident that happened in the parking lot at Beer Thirty located along Highway 30. Tyler Lee Braasch told the investigating officer that he was inside Beer Thirty when another customer told him that someone had backed up and hit his green 2002 Chevrolet Silverado pickup and had driven off. Braasch said he ran outside trying to yell at the driver to stop but the vehicle fled the scene. The vehicle was later identified as a blue 2021 Hyundai Palisade SEL. The investigating officer got a cell phone picture of the vehicle from a witness. The witness said she was sitting in her vehicle when she heard and witnessed the vehicle back into the pickup and her first reaction was to take a photo of the other vehicle’s license plate before it fled the scene. At the time the police report was filed, the Hyundai had not been located. The pickup received $500 damage to the middle passenger side.

May 26, 6:18 p.m.: Jonathan Fabian Segura Avina, 25, of Denison, was arrested and charged with domestic abuse assault, injury or mental illness, 1st offense.

May 27, 12:30 a.m.: Mavrick Harris, 30, of Denison, was arrested on two warrants and charged with violating a no-contact order. According to documents filed in district court, Harris was charged with domestic abuse assault impeding flow of air/blood and child endangerment, both aggravated misdemeanors. A criminal complaint said that at about 12:15 p.m. on May 22, Harris knowingly impeded the normal breathing or circulation of blood by applying pressure to the throat/neck area of his victim, and that he abandoned his child with an unknown female after assaulting the mother of the child. The person with which the child was abandoned said she did not know Harris or the child, but that Harris handed the child to her while she was outside her residence smoking. A document filed in regard to violation of a no-contact order said that Harris spoke to the victim at 12:01 a.m. on May 27.

May 27, 12:30 a.m.: A resident of Denison reported the theft of a red Lululemon bag with women’s clothing valued at $100.

May 27, 5:33 p.m.: The Crawford County Sheriff’s Office investigated a vehicle vs. deer accident. Liliana Lissbeth Saravia Gomez, 24, of Denison, was driving a red 2024 Honda Pilot west on S Avenue when a deer ran onto the roadway. The vehicle struck the deer with its front driver’s side, resulting in $5,000 damage.

May 28, 12:57 p.m.: The Crawford County Sheriff’s Office investigated a two-vehicle accident that happened in Denison. Leonardo Dennis Nava, 23, of Audubon, was driving a blue 2021 Ford Explorer, owned by the City of Denison Police Department, north on 15th Street and was at the intersection with 4th Avenue North. Nava said he looked but didn’t see a red 2000 Pontiac Sunfire SE and proceeded from a yield sign at the intersection. His vehicle collided with the passenger side of the Pontiac, which was being driven east on 4th Avenue North by Jesus Segouiano-Trujillo, 69, of Denison. The police vehicle received $8,500 damage and Segouiano-Trujillo’s vehicle received $2,000 damage. No injuries were reported.

May 30, 6:55 p.m.: The Crawford County Sheriff’s Office investigated an accident that happened in Denison. Michael Joseph Pascual Lopez, 19, of Denison, was driving a gray 2019 Ford Mustang and was traveling north in the right lane of Highway 59/141/39, approaching an overpass. A second vehicle, possibly a black truck, was approaching Pascual Lopez’s vehicle from behind in the left northbound lane. The no-contact truck abruptly pulled into the right northbound lane, cutting off Pascual Lopez’s vehicle. Pascual Lopez hit his brakes; he lost control of his vehicle which went down the embankment and spun around. The truck continued north on the highway and was not located. No injuries were reported. Pascual Lopez’s vehicle received $7,000 damage.
