Monarch girls win two from Shenandoah

The Denison-Schleswig Monarch girls topped Shenandoah 4-2 and 7-3 in a doubleheader played in Denison on Monday.

In game #1, the Monarchs scored three times in the fifth inning and once in the sixth. Shenandoah scored two runs in the sixth.

Denison-Schleswig’s three hits came from Norah Huebert, Emily Gehlsen and Avery Bock.

Shenandoah had four hits in the game.

Claire Leinen struck out nine Shenandoah batters and walked two. Peyton Athen struck out eight Monarch batters and walked none.

In game #2, the Monarchs scored three runs in the third and four in the fifth. Shenandoah scored two runs in the third and one in the fifth.

Claire Leinen and Avery Bock each had two hits, and Mayah Slater, Emily Gehlsen and Gracen Plagge had one hit each, for a total of seven.

Norah Huebert pitched the win. She struck out one batter and walked one. Leinen pitched two innings and got the save. She struck out two batters and walked one.

The Monarchs struck out only once and drew five walks.

 
 

Monarch girls split games in tournament

 
 

The Denison-Schleswig Monarch girls split a pair of softball games at the Storm Lake tournament on Saturday.

The Monarchs defeated AHST 3-2 in the first game, which went to eight innings, and fell to Storm Lake 12-1 in the second game. That game ended in the fifth inning.

In the first game, the Monarchs got three hits from Mayah Slater, two from Claire Leinen and one each from Ann Wessel and Avery Bock, for a total of seven.

Claire Leinen got the win. She struck out 18 and walked four batters.

The Monarchs struck out 12 times and walked once.

In the second game, the Monarchs got two hits from Ann Wessel and one each from Norah Huebert and Claire Leinen, for a total of four.

Storm Lake collected 12 hits.

Leinen started and pitched two-thirds inning. She struck out one and walked four, while giving up 10 runs on six hits. Huebert pitched three and one-third innings. She struck out two, walked two, and gave up two runs on six hits.


 

Monarch girls edged by Lewis Central

 

The Denison-Schleswig Monarch girls had the early lead in a game against Lewis Central at Iowa Western in Council Bluffs on Tuesday. However, Lewis Central tied the score at 3-3 in the sixth inning and scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The Monarchs scored three runs in the top of the second inning. Lewis Central answered back with two runs in the bottom of the second. The game was scoreless for the next three innings until Lewis Central’s game-tying run in the sixth.

The Monarchs got two hits from Kamden Bruhn and one each from Mayah Slater, Claire Leinen, Gaby Cardenas and Gracen Plagge, for a total of six.

On the mound, Leinen struck out six and walked one batter.

The Monarchs struck out three times and walked once.
