Extension calendar

June 26: Fencing and grazing clinic at Western Research Demonstration Farm at Castana.  Five sessions offered: new tools in fencing, building your paddocks, weather outlook, planning for weather resilience, and research farm tour. The free program runs 9 a.m.-4 p.m. and includes lunch. Preregister by June 24 by calling 515-294-2333 or email beefcenter@iastate.edu and provide your name, email and phone number.

June 27: Armstrong Research and Demonstration Farm field day at Lewis, 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Topics include setting up your planter for success in the field, alternative overwintering crop cover species of camelina, triticale and/or barley, drone technology in fungicide applications and cover crop seeding (includes a live drone spray), and current weather outlook in Southwest Iowa. July 17-21: Crawford County Fair

August 21: Farmland leasing meeting at Crawford County Extension office, 36 South Main Street, Denison. Doors open at 1 p.m. Program starts at 1:30 p.m. and will last about two and one-half hours. Topics will be various methods to determine a fair 2024 cash rental rate and the importance of good tenant/landlord communications, with emphasis placed on recent returns to Iowa Cash Rented Land and the 2024 Iowa Cash Rental Rate Survey. Pre-register by August 16 by calling the extension office at 712-263-4697. Registration fee of $20 can be paid at the door. Participants receive 100-page booklet and meeting handouts.
