Dwain Swensen was born on August 15, 1949, at his home near Kirkman, Iowa, to Don and Gertrud (Tinzel) Swensen. He attended school mostly in the Kiron and Denison, Iowa, school systems and graduated with the Denison High School class of ’67. He attended Iowa State University obtaining a B.S. in Agricultural Business.

He loved his crop farming. He was most excited during planting and harvesting and of course watching his crops grow. Besides farming, he had other jobs throughout the years. He worked at Smithfield Foods in Denison until 2010 in various capacities, the last being in the microbiology lab.  He drove a gravel truck and was a substitute mail carrier for a short time. He delivered highway products for Hawkeye Fabrication in Ida Grove, Iowa, until 2013.

On August 6, 1977, Dwain married Joan Schmidt. They lived near Kiron all of their married life. They were happy to welcome two daughters, Jennifer and Jodie, into their family as well as two fine sons-in-law later in life. He was a dedicated husband, father, and grandpa, who was always encouraging in his quiet manner while at the same time instilling Christian values.

Dwain was a man of strong faith in his Lord and Savior and strived to live his life accordingly.  At church he served as a deacon for many years. He was a member of the Gideons International organization which distributes Bibles locally and all over the world. He was also the treasurer for the Western Iowa Fellowship of Evangelicals.

Dwain was proud to serve his country in the Army National Guard for close to 30 years. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 383 in Kiron. He served on the Kiron Cemetery Board as well as the Stockholm Township Board.

He enjoyed collecting coins, guns, and had small scale John Deere tractors and implements on display.
