Primary election this Tuesday

 
 

The primary elections for the Republican, Democratic and Libertarian parties will be Tuesday, June 4. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

All locally challenged races are on the Republican ballot.

Yovan G. Cardenas and Roger E. Rasmussen are running for county sheriff. The incumbent, James R. Steinkuehler, is retiring. Cardenas is the captain with the Denison Police Department and Rasmussen is the chief deputy with the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office.

Jean Heiden, Paul Outhouse, Ty Rosburg and James R. Steinkuehler are running for the county board of supervisors. Two seats are up for election. Heiden and Rosburg are the incumbents.

The supervisor and sheriff candidates have answered short questionnaires, giving their views on issues. Please read their responses beginning on pages 7 and 8 of this issue.

Reponses to absentee voting has been good. As of Wednesday morning, the Crawford County Auditor’s office had requests for 199 absentee ballots and 172 of those had been received.

People can continue to vote early in person at the auditor’s office up to 5 p.m. on Monday, June 3. Crawford County Auditor Terri Martens said that her office would be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. this Saturday, June 1, for early voting as well. 

Absentee ballots can be brought to the auditor’s office up until 8 p.m. on Election Day in order to be counted.

A note about voting in the primary election is that people can change their party preference at the poll on Election Day.

Charter Oak Precinct, City of Charter Oak, and Charter Oak, Hanover and Willow townships: Charter Oak Community Building, 29 Main Street

DCAB Precinct, cities of Dow City, Buck Grove and Arion, and Boyer, Paradise, Union and Washington townships: Brasel Building, 101 Franklin Street, Dow City

Denison Wards, all wards in the City of Denison, and Denison and Goodrich townships: Boulders Conference Center, 2507 Boulders Drive

Northeast, cities of Deloit, Vail and Westside, and Jackson, Milford, Stockholm and Westside townships: Vail Community Room, 309 Main Street

Southeast Precinct, cities of Aspinwall and Manilla, and East Boyer, Hayes, Iowa and Nishnabotna townships: Manilla Fire Station, 553 Main Street

SRK Precinct, cities of Kiron, Ricketts and Schleswig, and Morgan, Otter Creek and Soldier townships: Immanuel Lutheran Church, 501 Glad Street, Schleswig

About voting

Pre-registered voters are required to provide an approved form of identification at the polling place before receiving and casting a regular ballot. Voters who are not pre-registered – such as voters registering to vote on Election Day – and voters changing precincts must also provide proof of residence.

A voter who is unable to provide an approved form of identification (or prove residence if required) 1)may have voter’s identity/residence attested to by another registered voter in the precinct, 2) prove identity and residence using Election Day Registration documents, or 3) cast a provisional ballot and provide proof of identity/residence at the County Auditor’s office by June 10, 2024, at noon. Election Day Registrant attesters must provide an approved form of identification.
