Fink sets school record at H-10 track and field championships

It was a big night for Jake Fink on Thursday, May 2, as he set a school record in the 400 meter hurdles at the Hawkeye-10 conference track and field championships.

Fink ran the event in 55.91 to eclipse a Monarch record that had stood for 27 years.

Head Coach Willie Baughman said the performance will give the Monarchs a huge boost in this week’s state qualifying meet.

As a team, the Denison-Schleswig Monarchs scored 20 points.

“It was by far the best weather night that we have had so far this year. We ended up 10th but I think it was a successful meet,” said Baughman. “The guys really did a good job all night and a lot of our young guys got a great experience at a postseason meet.”

The Monarchs turned in 14 personal records.

She has been playing at a high level.”

Monarch boys fall to Kuemper in Tennis

Kuemper Catholic had the upper hand in a tennis meet on Friday, May 2, winning 9-0 in matches against the visiting Denison-Schleswig Monarch boys’ varsity.

“Kuemper is the strongest team in our conference, and they handed it to us today in the most dominant win I have witnessed,” said Head Coach Aaron Ratliff. “One of the positives today was that our young players competed well and that if they continue to improve, we can turn things around.”

Among the highlights for the day was a win by freshman Grant Fink in junior varsity action.

“It is his first year playing tennis and he will continue to get better every time he plays,” said Ratliff. “He moved his opponent around the court well today.

“Jayden Bradley, also a first-year player, was back in our lineup after an injury. He is a scrappy player. Together, with Grant in doubles, they narrowly lost in a 3-7 tiebreaker after going 6-6 with their opponent.”

Schulz qualifies for state tennis tournament

Monarchs senior Kiana Schulz placed second at the regional tennis tournament in Atlantic on Monday, May 6, and qualified for the state tournament set for Iowa City on May 24.

In the first round, Schulz defeated Ava Easter of Ballard 6-0 and 6-2, and defeated Kaitlyn Mullanix of Glenwood in the second round by the same scores. Schulz defeated the #3 seed Scarlett McGuinnis of Harlan in the third round, 6-1 and 6-0. In the championship round, she lost to #1 seed Katlyn Zugay of Ballard 6-3 and 6-3.

Schulz was the #2 seed in the regional singles tournament.

Head Coach Spencer Pauley said, “There were many good tennis players in Atlantic and we competed with some of the best from around the state. Claire (Leinen) and Abby (Gutierrez) played their best tennis and fell one match short of state. They have a lot to be proud of and avenged a loss which shows you how much they have improved.”

Leinen and Gutierrez won their rounds one and two doubles matches and fell in the semifinals to a doubles team from Ballard. They lost their match for third place and ended up fourth in the doubles tournament.

Pauley said Schulz beat some outstanding opponents on her way to placing second.

“Her powerful serve was the best it has ever been,” he said and added that she has been close in many years to qualifying for state.

“To finally get there is amazing,” he said.

Pauley continued that Lynnae Johnson, Zoey Beery and Abbey Meseck had some tough draws but he was proud of how they competed.

Denison-Schleswig Monarchs Soccer

Denison-Schleswig wins in soccer over Carroll

The Denison-Schleswig varsity girls scored two goals in the first half and three in the second half to hand host Carroll a 5-1 decision on Thursday, May 2.

Denison-Schleswig had 18 shots on goal to seven for Carroll. Monarch goalie Sam Chandler had six saves.

Goals

Estela Lupian scored on a shot from 15 yards out at 4:18 into the match. Assist by Libby Leon.

Hally Escobar scored on a 17-yard shot with 7:43 remaining in the first half. Assist by Estela Lupian.

Aremy Santos scored on a deflected shot from three yards out with 33.37 remaining in the match. Assist by Janet Castillo.

Aremy Santos scored on a 17-yard shot with 32.43 remaining in the match. Assist by Karla Sanchez.

After a steal from Carroll’s goalkeeper, Aremy Santos scored on an 18-yard shot with 26.50 remaining in the match.

Carroll’s goal was scored late in the game from six yards out on a counter of a Denison-Schleswig possession with a crossing pass from the right wing to the left post.

“We decided to go with three forwards and four midfielders instead of two and five in the hopes of creating more shots,” said Head Coach Chris Eller. “We did create more shots, and some of our shots were fantastic shots. We hit shots just inside the post and just under the crossbar for all five of our goals. Carroll has a good keeper who saved a lot of our good shots because she has good agility and quickness side to side covering the goal, in addition to being tall. “The goals we scored were shots no keeper was going to get to.

“We had an emphasis on being more aggressive on offense, both in taking shots when we had space and being more aggressive in attacking the defense when we had one-on-one opportunities instead of regularly looking to pass the ball in those situations,” Eller added.

Denison-Schleswig girls win in soccer shootout

After battling to a 0-0 tie in regulation play and two overtimes, the Denison-Schleswig girls’ varsity topped Glenwood in a shootout of penalty kicks.

With the win, the Monarch girls improved their season record to 5-8 and 2-4 in the Hawkeye-10 Conference.

Glenwood kicked first in the shootout and made its shot. The Monarchs’ Karla Sanchez followed with a made shot just inside the left post for a 1-1 score. Glenwood kicked second and the shot hit the crossbar and bounced straight down but didn’t cross the line. Denison-Schleswig’s second shot was above the crossbar. On Glenwood’s third shot, Sam Chandler made a diving save just inside the left post. Denison-Schleswig’s third shot hit the crossbar. Glenwood’s fourth shot hit the crossbar. Aremy Santos made her shot; it skimmed off the right post and into the side net to make the score 2-1. Glenwood made its fifth shot to tie the shootouts 2-2. Estela Lupian, who was the last kicker, made her shot just inside the right post to win the shootout 3-2, giving the Monarchs the 1-0 victory.

Glenwood took 16 shots on goal. Monarch goalie Sam Chandler had 15 saves. She also had one save in the shootouts.

Jimena Lupian had one non-keeper save for the Monarchs.

Denison-Schleswig took three shots on goal.

“The records on Bound go back to 2011 and Denison hadn’t beaten Glenwood in girls’ soccer since before 2011,” said Head Coach Chris Eller. “Glenwood has a great team with a lot of speed;  they share nine varsity players who are out for soccer and track. I would assume several of their players will be running in the state track meet.”

He continued, “We got the shutout with a combination of some great saves by Sam and Jimena, dodging a couple bullets and mostly by playing very good defense with marking very well and forcing Glenwood to take most of their shots from outside of 25 yards out. We had to adjust our defense at halftime because Glenwood was owning the middle of the field against us, creating too many shots. We cut down their number of shots in the second half and overtime with that adjustment.”

Eller gave recognition to Jimena Lupian, Xochitl Arellano, Jocelyn Serrato, Janet Castillo, Leilany Morales, Rosy Segoviano, Libby Leon, Estela Lupian, Hally Escobar, Giana Garcia, Mia Garcia, Nadia Medina and Karla Sanchez for staying marked up in the midfield and defense to prevent Glenwood from getting any easy shots.

He said that the match was the signature win of his three years of coaching the girls’ varsity team.

Denison-Schleswig Monarchs Soccer

Monarch girls fall in soccer match shootout

After playing even through regulation time, two overtime periods and shootouts, the Denison-Schleswig girls’ varsity soccer team fell to Kuemper Catholic in sudden victory on Monday, April 29, at Denison.

Kuemper struck first in the match, scoring just 2:11 into the match on a shot from eight yards out following a crossing pass from the right corner to the left post that got through the entire Denison-Schleswig defense.

The Monarchs’ Libby Leon scored just 3:09 into the match on a shot from 23 yards out near the left post following a steal from a Kuemper defender trying to clear the ball away from Aremy Santos.

The remainder of regulation and both 10-minute overtimes were scoreless, so the match went into shootouts, with both teams alternating shots from the 12-yard penalty kick mark. Kuemper kicked first and made three of five kicks; one kick was saved by Sam Chandler. Denison-Schleswig had shots made by Karla Sanchez, Libby Leon and Aremy Santos.

After being tied 3-3 after the first round of shootouts, the shootout went to sudden victory. Kuemper’s first two shots were saved by Sam Chandler. Denison’s first two shots weren’t on goal. Kuemper made its third shot while Denison-Schleswig’s third shot was saved by Kuemper’s goalkeeper, ending the match.

“We made one mistake on defense very early and they made us pay for it,” said Head Coach Chris Eller. “Otherwise, we played great defense all game, especially shutting down their speedy forward who had 12 goals this season coming into the game. We had four really good chances in regulation and overtime to score goals, but we were either off target from wide open shots 18-20 yards out or shot right to their keeper from about 10 yards out. This loss hurts not just because it’s a conference loss, but also in my opinion we outplayed Kuemper, out possessed Kuemper and created more chances to win.”

Shots on goal were 13 for Kuemper and eight for the Monarchs.

Monarch goalie Sam Chandler had 12 saves in the match and three more saves in the penalty kick shootouts.

With the loss, Denison-Schleswig fell to 3-8 overall and 1-4 in the Hawkeye 10 conference.

Richard Gonzalez, Rene Vargas and Abner Velasco all had one assist; Carlos Zamago assisted two goals this evening.

Goalies Sebatian Contreras and Chris Magana had a total of 10 saves with one finding the back of the net.

D-S girls win home tennis meet against St. Albert, fall to Lewis Central

The Denison-Schleswig varsity and junior varsity girls scored wins against St. Albert at a tennis meet in Denison on Monday, April 22.

The varsity girls won 6-3.

In singles play, Kiana Schulz (#1) won 8-0; Abby Gutierrez (#2) won 8-3, Abbey Meseck (#5) won 8-2 and Zoey Beery (#6) won 8-1.

In doubles play, Kiana Schulz and Claire Leinen won 8-2, and Abby Gutierrez and Lynnae Johnson won 8-3.

“It was a great evening of tennis,” said Head Coach Spencer Pauley. “St. Albert is always a tough opponent and it felt great to get 4-2 out of singles play. Then, we took two doubles matches which helped us get the 6-3 win.”

The junior varsity won its meet 8-2. Abby Ratliff, Shelby Kastner, Christell Salazar and Leila Jaime all won their singles matches.

The junior varsity swept the doubles matches.

On Friday, April 19, the D-S girls were hosted by a tough seventh-ranked Lewis Central team and fell 6-3.

“We fell a little short but gave it our best shot,” said Pauley. “We just couldn’t finish some games in singles, which is what really hurt us.”

He listed the following highlights.

Kiana Schulz remained undefeated; she beat her opponent 8-3.

Kiana Schulz and Claire Leinen have great team chemistry and communication, which helped them get an 8-4 win.

Along with those wins, Abbey Meseck and Zoey Beery won their #3 doubles match, 8-4.

On Thursday, April 18, the Monarch girls were shorthanded against Sioux City East and lost 5-4 in matches.

Highlights from the meet were another singles win by Kiana Schulz at #1, a #2 singles win by Abby Gutierrez, and what Pauley said was Claire Leinen’s best win of her career at #3 singles.

Monarchs boys top Harlan, Tri Center in soccer

The Denison-Schleswig Monarch boys’ varsity scored four goals in the first half and two in the second half en route to defeating Harlan 6-1 on Monday, April 22.

Harlan scored the first goal of the match.

Scoring for the Monarchs were Luke Wiebers and Richard Gonzalez with two goals each, and Kevin Sanchez and Osvan Diaz with one goal apiece.

Christopher Magnia had 10 saves on goal for the Monarchs.

In junior varsity action, the Monarchs topped Harlan 2-0.

On Friday, April 19, the Monarchs defeated Tri Center of Neola 2-0 at home.

Richard Gonzalez and Chris Lara each scored a goal. Goalie Chris Magana had five saves.

On Thursday, April 18, the Monarchs lost 7-0 to Bishop Heelan in Sioux City.

Monarch girls soccer team falls to Harlan

The season record for the Denison-Schleswig girls’ varsity soccer team fell to 3-6 overall and 1-3 in the Hawkeye 10 Conference with a 5-1 loss to Harlan on Monday, April 22.

Harlan had 23 shots on goal to eight for Denison. Monarch goalie Sam Chandler had 18 saves.

“The possession was much more even than the stats and the scoreboard indicate,” said Head Coach Chris Eller. “Even when we went into a very strong wind during the first half, we possessed the ball equally with Harlan. The difference in the game was when Harlan countered our possessions, they would control the ball with accurate passing that led to good shots. When we countered Harlan’s possessions, we would lose possession with an errant pass or reception of a pass, pass the ball too far ahead on the turf, or we got offsides due to not paying attention to their back line.”

The Monarchs’ goal was scored by Hally Escobar – her first goal of the season – on an assist by Aremy Santos. Escobar scored on a shot from 11 yards out with 19:13 remaining in the match.

Monarch girls fall in home soccer tournament

The Denison-Schleswig Monarch girls varsity soccer team faced two tough opponents in the Lady Monarch Tournament on Saturday, April 20.

The Monarch girls lost to Treynor 2-0 and then fell to Gilbert 5-0.

In the first match, Treynor had 25 shots on goal to two shots on goal for the Monarchs. Monarch goalie Sam Chandler had 22 saves; one non-goalkeeper save was made by Giana Garcia.

In the second match, Gilbert had 24 shots on goal to two shots on goal for the Monarchs. Chandler had 19 saves.

Riverside, East Sac and Panorama were the other teams in the tournament.

The losses put Denison-Schleswig’s record to 3-5 overall.

“Today was a tough day against two really good teams, but our schedule will get easier soon,” said Head Coach Chris Eller. “The teams we faced today made us get better with communication and that should help us for the remainder of the season.”

Eller had the following comments about the first match.

“Treynor completely controlled the match, but we did a good job defensively by forcing them to take the majority of their shots from outside of 15 yards. Sam (Chandler) had a great game in goal and our defense and midfielders did a great job of marking up. Treynor got a goal off a steal which led to their player being unmarked from about 18 yards out and the other goal was on a great shot from about 20 yards out. Treynor has a lot of speed and was able to shut down all of our counters, especially since most of our counters had to be at least 60 yards long once we regained possession.”

“Gilbert was another really good team that controlled the possession the entire match,” Eller said about the second match. “Again, we played good defense, marked up all of their players well and didn’t give up anything easy. Gilbert scored two goals on great one-on-one moves after receiving a pass with their back to a defender, turning and getting off a shot from around 18 yards out. They scored two goals on nice headers off beautiful crossing passes, and they had one goal from about 30 yards out just under the crossbar. Their goals were all due to their players making plays. We just weren’t able to maintain possession enough to create many shots.”

Monarch boys fall in home tennis meet to Heelan

The Denison-Schleswig boys’ varsity tennis team had a tough day on their home courts on Thursday, April 11, falling 9-0 to Sioux City Heelan.

“Heelan has a freshman playing in the #1 position that is very good. It really helped their depth and made the rest of the matchups that much tougher,” said Monarchs Head Coach Aaron Ratliff.

He listed the following highlights for his team.

Danny Saldana played a competitive match by forcing his opponent to hit some difficult shots in the wind. He ended up just barely losing 6-8.

Blaine Brodsky and Braden Curnyn continued to play good doubles despite the 6-8 loss.

Owen Galvin continued to dominate at the J.V. level with his 8-1 win.

J.V tennis boys avenge losses to Shenandoah

After a disappointing 0-9 finish against Shenandoah on Friday, April 12, the Denison-Schleswig J.V. boys avenged some losses in head-to-head matchups with Shenandoah’s top three players on Saturday, April 13.

The event was Shenandoah’s inaugural J.V. tournament.

Two Denison-Schleswig players placed in the tournament’s top flight. Owen Galvin placed first and Grant Fink placed third.

Denison-Schleswig’s seven players were divided into a top flight A and lower flight B, which had its own singles tournaments.

Other teams in the tournament were Abraham Lincoln, Audubon, Clarinda and Thomas Jefferson.

Owen Galvin registered four wins en route to first place, including a 6-3 win over teammate Grant Fink in the semifinals.

“Owen was athletic enough to defensively get many of his opponents’ difficult shots back, while offensively putting his volleys away at the net. He works hard to get his points and it paid off,” said Head Coach Aaron Ratliff.

Grant Fink’s only loss in the tournament was to Galvin.

“Grant played fantastic today,” said Ratliff. “In his final match he avenged a loss to Shenandoah’s #1 J.V. player the day earlier, by winning 6-0. It is a shame he drew into the bottom half of the draw with Owen. They probably would have finished first and second instead of first and third.”

John Parr and Tyson Stoppel won their first matches and lost their second.

“t was good to see John and Tyson pick up wins today. In tournament play that doesn’t always happen,” said Ratliff.

Flight B players for Denison-Schleswig were Jessie Saldana, Ryder Lee and Blaze Palmer. Each dropped their first-round matches.

“Jessie hit many good deep shots against his opponent and showed some promise,” Ratliff commented. “Ryder played good at the net but his forehand wasn’t as consistent as I’ve seen in the past. Blaze shows so much potential as a beginning player. He has a fast serve and is not afraid to stroke the ball with power. He is going to keep getting better and better.”

Doubles wins launch Monarch girls to a tennis victory

The Denison-Schleswig varsity girls swept their doubles matches against Shenandoah on Friday, April 12, to win register a 6-3 win in a tennis dual.

“We knew coming into today that it was going to be a tough matchup,” said Head Coach Spencer Pauley. “I figured it was going to come down to doubles and that is what happened. We split 3-3 in singles but were able to get all three wins in doubles. I am proud of the effort we showed against a solid opponent in Shenandoah. Everyone on the team played their part and it is awesome to see the team have success.”

Pauley listed the following highlights from the dual.

Kiana Schulz’s dominant singles play continued where she won 8-3. She has proven to be one of the best players in our area and is only going to continue to strengthen her game as the season goes on.

Abby Gutierrez lost a close singles match. She has been in some tough matches recently which will only help her in the long run. Abby has been playing at a very high level.

Claire Leinen picked up a doubles win with Kiana. Claire’s shots have been very powerful which is awesome to watch. She is hitting it the hardest on the team right now.

Abbey Meseck picked up a huge singles win for us. She was down 4-7 and ended up winning five straight. I believe that was the match that gave us the momentum.

Zoey Berry has been playing phenomenal tennis. She has been solid all year for us picking up the win today 8-3.

Lynnae Johnson picked up a win with Abby Gutierrez in doubles. They are always a fun team to watch and play well together.

Monarch girls shutout Lo-Ma in soccer

On Thursday, April 11, the Denison-Schleswig girls’ varsity soccer team improved its season record to 3-0 with a 2-0 win over Logan-Magnolia.

Denison-Schleswig had eight shots on goal to four for Lo-Ma. The Monarch’s Sam Chandler had four saves on goal.

The halftime score was 1-0.

Libby Leon scored her third goal of the season on an assist by Rosy Segoviano (third assist of season) on a shot from five yards out with 36:46 remaining in the first half.

Aremy Santos scored her sixth goal of the season on an assist by Libby Leon (second assist of

season) on a shot from 10 yards out with 35:42 remaining in the match.

“We beat a good soccer team tonight. Lo-Ma has some players with good speed and some players who have powerful legs,” said Head Coach Chris Eller. “I was really impressed with our defense tonight as we did a great job of keeping everything in front of us by not waiting too long to drop back on their counters. Our midfielders did a great job of marking up the drops and we really didn’t give up a great shot attempt all night due to a great team effort on defense.

“Offensively, I was really happy to see that both of our goals came as the direct result of things we’ve been working on in practice,” said Eller.

“We worked quite a bit on switching the ball from side to side and that was our first goal on a great cross from Rosy (Segoviano) to Libby (Leon), who did a great job of spreading out wide and keeping the cross pass in front of her. Our second goal came from a great throw-in coupled with a great box out on a defender to win the ball. After that, Aremy (Santos) went to work and scored a very impressive goal beating a double team.

Monarch girls fall to Lewis Central soccer team

The Monarch varsity girls fell 7-0 in a soccer match against Lewis Central in Council Bluffs on Friday, April 12.

Lewis Central had 23 shots on goal to none for Denison-Schleswig.

Sam Chandler had 16 saves on goal for the Monarchs.

The score at the half was 1-0.

The loss put the Monarch girls’ season record at 3-1 and 1-1 in the Hawkeye 10 Conference.

Head Coach Chris Eller said that Lewis Central does a great job of possessing the ball.

“They move the ball around the field very well with very few bad touches, so they don’t beat themselves. When we got a touch, we weren’t able to string three or four consecutive passes together to maintain possession,” Eller commented. “Part of that was because our midfielders were too hesitant to push up on offense and help out the forwards.”

He said the Monarchs played great defense in the first half.

“We stayed marked up and forced them to take shots outside of the box and Sam (Chandler) was able to have a lot of saves. Their only goal came on a beautiful corner kick for a header just inside the back post,” Eller said.

He continued that Lewis Central changed its playing style in the second half because the Monarchs were effective in stopping the short passing game down the middle.

He added that fatigue was a factor in the second half as his team was down two regulars and the girls had to play more minutes than usual.

“We played defense almost the entire game and really did a good job for the most part against a great team. Sam (Chandler) had a great game in goal with some clean catches on some really hard shots on goal. If we can continue to defend like we did, we should be able to stay in games against all the tough teams on our schedule.”

D-S teams split soccer matches with St. Albert

The Denison-Schleswig boys topped St. Albert 5-3 on Monday, April 15, at YMCA Fields in Council Bluffs while the Monarch girls fell 5-1 to St. Albert.

For the boys, Chris Lara led the team with three goals and Carlos Zamago finished the night with two goals.

Emmanuel Prado had two assists and Richard Gonzalez and Carlos Zamago each had one assist.

Sebastian Contreras had a total of nine saves on goal.

The Denison-Schleswig girls’ loss put their record at 3-2 overall and 1-2 in the Hawkeye 10 Conference.

The Monarch girls’ goal was scored by Libby Leon (her fourth for the season) with eight minutes remaining in the match. Karla Sanchez made her fourth assist of the season when she passed the ball from the left wing to Leon who was 18 yards away from the goal.

“St. Albert has a very nice team and is another team that does a great job of possessing the soccer ball,” said Head Coach Chris Eller. “I thought we did a great job defensively on staying marked up and making their shots tough, especially for their leading scorer. Janet Castillo and Lynnae Johnson had a great game defensively on their all-state forward. Our trouble was possessing the ball. We gave up two goals, turning the ball over due to being unable to complete simple, short passes that led to steals and open shots. We just weren’t able to string together enough consecutive passes to create many shots.”

St. Albert had 23 shots to four for the Monarchs. Shots on goal were 15 for St. Albert and three for the Monarchs. The Monarchs’ Jocelyn Serrato had 10 saves in goal.

The Denison-Schleswig Lady Monarchs started its season with a 5-0 conference victory at home against Creston on April 4.

“Tonight was a great win to start the season. Defensively, we dodged a bullet very early as we nearly were down 1-0 right away. After that, we played great defense and stopped almost all of Creston’s counters without a shot,” said Head Coach Chris Eller. “When they did shoot, Sam Chandler did a good job of saving all their shots on goal.

“Offensively, we passed the ball pretty well and more importantly the girls played very unselfishly,” he added. “Our movement and spacing were pretty solid for most of the game. At times we got bunched up, or we kept the ball on one side of the field and had too many bodies to try to get our shots through. When we swung the ball side to side we got some one-on-one shots. We got a couple of goals on very good passes through gaps in their defense.”

Eller added that Creston’s goalkeeper had some very nice saves.

“I thought the girls did a great job of recognizing when to shoot and we had lots of girls take the shots when the opportunity was there,” he said. “I really like the trust the girls showed with their teammates tonight.”

Lady Monarchs shut out Riverside in soccer

The Denison-Schleswig Lady Monarchs improved their record to 2-0 with a 6-0 win in soccer over Riverside in an away match on Tuesday.

Denison-Schleswig led 5-0 at halftime.

“We didn’t play our best soccer, but we did enough to get a win and also got 23 girls into the match for significant playing time,” said Head Coach Chris Eller. “With three games in four days, I didn’t want to have anybody play too many minutes tonight.”

He added that his team struggled with its touches as Riverside’s grass football field was very bumpy; the ball took a lot of funny hops on passes.

The Lady Monarchs also had a lot of shots go over the crossbar or just wide of the goal. At least three shots hit the post or the crossbar.

“Defensively, we had some breakdowns and dodged a couple of bullets when we substituted,” Eller said. “We will need to develop some depth this year because we won’t have all of our players for several games this year due to other activities that the girls are involved in. Hopefully, that depth will develop with continued learning at practice.”

Shots: D-S 31, Riverside 3

Shots on goal: D-S 13, Riverside 1

Saves: One save for Jocelyn Serrato. Sam Chandler also played in the goal but didn’t face any shots on goal.

Goals

1) Aremy Santos scored her 3rd goal of the season just 1:43 into the match, assisted by Rosy Segoviano (1st assist of the season). Segoviano had the ball on the right wing and kicked the ball over the head of the Riverside sweeper to Santos who took one dribble and hit the shot from 6 yards out.

2) Aremy Santos scored her 4th goal of the season with 25 minutes left in the 1st half, assisted by Libby Leon (1st assist of the season). Leon stole a pass from a Riverside player 18 yards from the goal, dribbled past 1 defender and passed the ball to Santos who was 8 yards from the goal. Santos 1-touched the pass just inside the left post.

3)  Aremy Santos scored her 5th goal of the season with 14:39 remaining in the 1st half. Karla Sanchez (3rd assist) had a shot on goal that the goalkeeper deflected back on the field. Santos crashed the shot and finished the rebound from 3 yards out.

4) Karla Sanchez scored her 2nd goal of the season from 28 yards out on a direct kick following a handball by a Riverside defender, with 10:38 remaining in 1st half.

5) Mia Garcia scored her 1st goal of the season on a penalty kick from 12 yards out with 8:01 remaining in the 1st half. The penalty kick was the result of Alexa Santos being tripped in the box after receiving a throw in and trying to dribble around a Riverside defender.

6) Libby Leon scored her 2nd goal of the season, assisted by Rosy Segoviano (2nd assist of the season). Rosy beat a Riverside player to the ball about 8 yards from the goal and passed the ball back to Libby who hit a 1 touch goal from 18 yards out with 31:30 remaining in the match.

The Denison-Schleswig Monarch boys fell 8-1 in a home meet against Sioux City East on Tuesday.

The doubles team of Blaine Brodsky and Braden Curnyn won the only match for the Monarchs.

“It was a rough outcome today. It is obvious that we need to spend more time practicing net play, overheads and groundstrokes,” said Head Coach Aaron Ratliff. “This Sioux City East team is young and will be a powerhouse for the next two years.”

Highlights

Blaine Brodsky and Braden Curnyn overcame disappointing singles losses to control their doubles match in an 8-5 win. The experience playing with each other in last Saturday’s Boone Tournament really helped their doubles play.

Some JV players that showed flashes on Tuesday. Owen Galvin won both his singles match and doubles match with Jayden Bradley. Grant Fink was also dominant in his 6-0 singles win and 6-0 doubles win with Ethan Olsen.

Both Grant Olsen’s and Ethan Olsen’s powerful serves were on. Ethan won his singles match with a 7-0 tiebreaker win.

The Monarch boys host Sioux City Heelan today (April 11) at 4 p.m. They travel to Shenandoah on Friday for a 4:30 p.m. meet, and on Saturday the Monarchs will compete in the Shenandoah J.V. tournament, beginning at 9 a.m.

Monarch boys win 9-0 in first tennis meet

The Denison-Schleswig Monarch boys took a 9-0 win from Harlan in the first tennis meet of the year on April 4.

“Harlan took a big hit from graduation last year, losing their top five players,” said Head Coach Aaron Ratliff. “With losing four players ourselves, this was a good first outing for our inexperienced squad. Hopefully we can continue to improve throughout the season. I particularly liked our dominant doubles play.”

Highlights

• Braden Curnyn’s forehands kept improving throughout the match. By the end of the doubles matches, they were almost unstoppable.

• Blaine Brodsky’s serve was dominant in singles play. When it is on, its power is hard to deal with.

• Hunter Pieper put his volleys away with authority, while his partner Omar Abarca kept his opponents at bay with solid groundstrokes.

• It was terrific to see the JV pitch a shutout today. It signals good things for future seasons.

Monarch boys fall to St. Albert in tennis

The Denison-Schleswig boys tennis team dropped a match to St. Albert, 7-2, on Friday, April 5.

“St. Albert has a young talented squad this year that is particularly strong up top,”  said Head Coach Aaron Ratliff. “We had some matches that could have turned our way, and I look forward to measuring our growth through the season by seeing how we compete against this same team at the conference tournament.”

He said highlights for the Monarchs were Blaine Brodsky playing well in a back and forth singles match against a strong Cole Pekny at No. 2. Brodsky ended up falling just short in an 8-10 loss. Another highlight was Danny Saldana winning both his singles and doubles matches.

“He has improved quite a bit from last season,” said Ratliff.

Saldana’s doubles partner was Adonay Arellano.

D-S boys take fourth and fifth places at Boone Tennis Invitational

The Denison-Schleswig boys’ varsity placed fourth in the Boone Tennis Invitational and the J.V. boys placed fifth on Saturday, April 6.

Ames, Dallas Center-Grimes, North Polk and South Tama were the other teams that competed in the invitational.

The Monarch varsity scored 123 points to net fourth place. The J.V. team scored 69 points.

Boone won the varsity and J.V. divisions.

This was the third year for Denison-Schleswig to compete at the Boone Invitational.

Head Coach Aaron Ratliff said the tournament format is designed to test the depth of a squad; players had to choose whether to play singles or doubles.

The varsity division featured three flights of singles and three flights of doubles. The J.V. division had two flights of singles and two flights of doubles.

“I placed our six best players in doubles competition, which meant that in the (varsity) singles, our top three J.V. players were usually facing the other teams’ varsity players,” said Ratliff. “It was a rough outing but they did pull our two wins.”

In the varsity division, the doubles teams of Blaine Brodsky and Braden Curnyn, and Adonay Arellano and Danny Saldana pulled out impressive wins over Ames to both place third.

In the J.V. tournament, Grant Fink had an impressive day going 4-1 and just barely missing out on a second-place finish.
